Acne treatment

ПостАвтор посту

I'm so frustrated. I have acne, but I also have sensitive, redness-prone skin (maybe rosacea?). Every acne product I buy says 'for acne' but it burns my face and makes me look like a tomato. I can't use benzoyl peroxide – it gives me a chemical burn. Salicylic acid makes me peel. What options exist for people with sensitive skin who still get pimples? I feel like I have to choose between acne or a red, peeling face.

RE: Acne treatment

You likely have 'acne rosacea' or just very sensitive skin with a compromised barrier. You need to avoid the classic acne fighters (BP, high % SA, retinoids). Instead, look for anti-inflammatory ingredients. Azelaic acid is your best friend. It kills acne bacteria AND reduces redness. It is gentle enough for rosacea. Also, sulfur is an old-school treatment that is very gentle – sulfur masks or washes can dry out pimples without burning. Finally, niacinamide (vitamin B3) reduces oil and strengthens the skin barrier. Do NOT use foaming cleansers. Use a milk or cream cleanser. And always, always moisturize before applying any active ingredient. This is called 'buffering' and it reduces irritation. See a derm to rule out actual rosacea, because the treatment is different (metronidazole cream).

I have type 2 rosacea (bumps and redness). My skin hates everything. A dermatologist finally diagnosed me correctly. She gave me a prescription for 15% azelaic acid gel (Finacea). It changed my life. No burning. The bumps were gone in 6 weeks. For professional acne treatment that is sensitive-skin safe, look for a clinic that does 'low and slow' protocols. They often use LED light therapy (blue and red light) which kills bacteria without any chemicals. I did a series of LED facials, and it calmed my skin so much. I also started using a silk pillowcase and only lukewarm water. If you want to see a med spa that specializes in sensitive skin acne, look here: https://bellasanamedspa.com/treatment/acne-treatment. Stop using drugstore actives. See a professional. Your skin is not 'tough' – it's a sensitive organ. Treat it gently.
